Thank you very much to the generosity of our Foundation donors—a client with brain injury was able to afford to have a driving assessment.
This 49-year-old woman came to our Brain Injury Service after suffering a brain haemorrhage. This injury left the client with permanent memory and cognitive impairment, so she was unable to return to work and earn an income. The client lived with her mother and grandmother, who her mother also cared for.
Unfortunately the client's initial NDIS application was unsuccessful, much to the distress of her family and treating team. The client then lodged an appeal via the Administrative Appeals Tribunal but this can sometimes take a long time. As the client had already been medically approved to have a driving assessment conducted by an occupational therapist but could not afford to pay for it, her mood was being negatively affected and the carer burden on her mother was significant.
The client's Royal Rehab Social Worker was successful in her application to our Foundation so this client could be safely assessed to return to driving, providing her with greater independence and less pressure on her mother.
